The Merimbula Centenary Committee has said that everything is starting to fall into place for a big 10-day event to celebrate Merimbula’s 100th birthday.
The celebrations will be launched by Australian test cricketer and academic, Paul Sheahan, at Club Sapphire Merimbula on Tuesday, March 27 at 12.30pm.
Mr Sheahan played cricket for Australia from 1967 to 1974 and finished his academic career as headmaster of Melbourne Grammar School from 1995 to 2009. His career also included a spell at Winchester College in the UK. In his public life he has been appointed to the boards of a wide range of trusts and charitable organisations and continues to be involved with many of them.
One of the oldest residents in Merimbula, who has a family history attached to the town, Chappie Munn, will launch the pictorial history that the Merimbula-Imlay Historical Society is producing. Posey Gray, the oldest Merimbula-born resident will also be there; it will be her 92nd birthday that day.
On Friday, March 30 the Merimbula Special Events Committee has organised the Centenary Ball at the Merimbula RSL Club, where music will be provided by the Royal Military College Duntroon Big Band. It promises to be a sparkling night.
On Saturday, March 31, the RAAF Roulettes will give an aerial display in the skies over Merimbula, adding a spectacular display to the many events happening over that weekend including Relay for Life.
There are events scheduled throughout the entire 10-day period including a lunch at the Merimbula RSL Club on Wednesday, April 4 where entrepreneur, Dick Smith, will be the guest speaker. Prior to lunch, Mr Smith will bury a time capsule prepared by local school students.
On Saturday, April 7, the Centenary will culminate with a parade and concert.
Centenary Committee member, Peter Charlton said that the parade promises to be a great event. A number of local organisations have already said they will march in the parade and anyone wanting to be involved should contact Peter Charlton on 0419 407667.
