When Merimbula pilot, Mitch Boyle, takes off from Albury today (Wednesday) he could be on his way to becoming the youngest pilot ever to fly solo around Australia.
Although it is yet to be confirmed, the 16 year old could claim himself an Australian record while raising money for charity.
Mitch is taking part in the Fly-Away-To-Heaven project that aims to raise funds and awareness of people living in East Timor.
Mitch and other participants will circumnavigate the coast of Australia.
Mitch's will take off, in the family's Sportstar aircraft, from Albury today, then fly to Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Broome, Darwin, Mt Isa, Cairns, Townsville, Brisbane, Sydney and then conclude back at Albury.
Mitch will be one of the youngest pilots taking part in the fundraiser and he is aiming to raise $30,000.
Local businesses have jumped aboard as sponsors, although Mitch is still looking for a corporate sponsor.
The Boyle family is fully funding the flight, which will take up to three weeks to complete, with all money raised going towards the project.
Mitch said the Fly-Away-To-Heaven project was a perfect opportunity to make a difference.
"We have a plane and I have a pilot's licence, so it's a project I was keen to get involved in. I will be supporting a worthwhile cause while also enjoying the experience of flying around Australia solo," he said.
"It's a huge flight and will take up to three weeks. I'm looking forward to it."
Mitch's parents Vicki and Norm farewelled their son from Merimbula airport yesterday morning.
