New plans for Merimbula Woolworths supermarket

28 Oct, 2009 08:55 AM
New plans have been submitted for the proposed Woolworths supermarket development in Main Street, Merimbula with the long-term aim of having all vehicles enter and leave from the rear of the site.

This would be dependent on council approving proposed new roadways for Merimbula including one that would run from Sapphire Coast Drive around the back of Club Sapphire Merimbula to link in with the top of Market Street.

This linkage, if approved and built, would have the effect of removing all supermarket traffic from Main Street with both service and customer vehicles entering and exiting the site from that roadway.

But under the amended DA, if approved by council, all vehicles will access the site from Main Street until the new road linkage is in place.

The plans, filed by Merimbula Nominees Pty Ltd, for a 3,800 square metre with parking for 291 vehicles, are on public exhibition until November 5.

They propose a radical reorientation of the building with the front entry to the supermarket on the side facing the adjoining Bega Valley Shire Council building rather than Main Street.

The new plans show only a side wall of the building with signage fronting Main Street, though it will be presented as a shop front using a mix of materials including large areas of glass, painted precast panels, brick and timber features as well as an awning.

Ground level car parking will also be at the side of the building - between the supermarket and the council building - rather than facing directly on to Main Street as in previous versions of the plan.

The new plans appear to have been drawn up in consultation with council to take account of possible future developments on the neighbouring council-owned land.

Demolition of the current council building and library would create potential for a large plaza area in front of the supermarket, or significantly more ground level parking in the centre of town.

The supermarket plans provide for 219 basement level car spaces and 72 car spaces at ground level.

Manager planning services, Keith Tull, said that council would look to condition any DA consent with a requirement that all vehicles should access and exit the site from the rear once the new access road is in place.

The amended plans make provision for customer vehicle access to the basement and ground level car parks as well as for delivery vehicle access to the loading dock from the north, or rear, of the site.

The proposed link from Sapphire Coast Drive would connect into Main Street in the vicinity of the Market Street intersection.

Mr Tull said he expected that a report would be put up to council for decision on the DA before the end of the year.
