Save Our Hospital ad campaign aims to pack powerful political punch

06 Jan, 2010 09:22 AM
2009 was an enormous year for Save Pambula Hospital Action Group.

“Politically, we are now recognised as a force to be reckoned with, not only through our continued pressure on politicians, but also through concerted efforts to explore and propose alternative, financially viable healthcare models,” said action group member Michelle Pettigrove.

“We have progressed from lobbying political leaders for a chance to have our say, to securing extended meetings with prominent members from both political parties regarding the current state and future plans of Pambula Hospital.

We are recognised by the Rural Doctors Association as a strong, worthwhile partner in their campaign to maintain and improve healthcare for regional and remote communities.”

Their website: savepambulahospital.com has become a focal point for other concerned communities wishing to express their frustrations and fears at the erosion of the quality of healthcare in their regions.

It is also widely recognised as a valuable resource tool to stay informed of the constantly changing status of health and hospitals around NSW.

An important recent development has been the incorporation of the group, which will now be known as Save Our Hospital Inc. This affords the group increased scope to generate funds, and gives it formal recognition as a properly constituted entity with specific aims, objectives and responsibilities, Ms Pettigrove said.

In March of this year a petition carrying over 22,000 signatures was delivered to State Parliament, proving without doubt the widespread and passionate support felt for the return of services to Pambula Hospital.

Save Pambula Hospital Action Group has also enjoyed a more prominent public profile this year with important stories being run on the ABC’s 7.30 Report, Nine Network’s A Current Affair, and WIN News, all helping to bring our message to a much wider audience.

“Capitalising on that exposure our media campaign, highlighting the state of health in our region, is anticipated to start in the new year.”

SPHAG would like to extend a huge thank you to all the groups and individuals who helped make the march held on Sunday, November 15, such a success.

“Four film crews worked tirelessly all day capturing the amazing passion and drive of the many communities involved in the Save Pambula Hospital campaign,” Ms Pettigrove said.

The massive job of editing what amounts to four days worth of footage had begun in earnest, with an impressive rough draft of the first commercial already cut together, she said.

The aim is to create four commercials, different in content but bearing the same message.

“We are currently taking professional advice on the most advantageous time to release these ads to gain maximum political clout.

“There are also four black and white television commercials exposing the plight of maternity services in our area, due to be shown on WIN TV early in 2010.

We are hoping to have a 20-minute version of the march, complete with bloopers and out-takes ready for a public viewing sometime in early February at the Picture Show Man Twin Cinemas.”

Stay tuned for more details soon.

“Gaining a significant media profile as well as recognition from both sides of politics has been a massive effort this year, not only from the members of the action group, but from the community itself,” Ms Pettigrove said.

“The fight is far from over, but this community has proved time and time again that it won’t give in to bullying, bungling or bullshit.

Once again, Save Our Hospital Inc would like to thank you for your tireless support.”
