Surf boat crews from around NSW and Victoria will converge on Pambula Beach this weekend for the opening round of the Warrilla Bowls Surfboat Series; the first time an event of this size has been held at Pambula.

A total of 50 crews have registered for the event, with organisers from host club Pambula hoping for good weather and reasonable swell to showcase the exciting spectacle of surf boat rowing action.

The event has attracted entries from as far south as Lakes Entrance, who have registered their ladies masters crew who took gold in the World Masters Games recently, while the Batemans Bay ladies masters crew who contested the finals in the same event, will also be down to compete.

“There are a lot of very talented crews registered and we are looking forward to some great surf rowing competition this Saturday”, Pambula SLSC secretary and organising panel member, Stuart Manson said.

“This is a first for Pambula SLSC. Having 50 surfboat crews competing at one carnival over an eight hour period will certainly be a spectacle”.

In its 10th season, the series attracts crews in the under 19, open ladies, open reserve and veterans male categories. For surf life saving clubs outside the metropolitan area, the series is an opportunity to put their skills and training to the test without travelling the long distances to Sydney and beyond to compete.

Stuart said it was Pambula, along with other crews from the Far South Coast, which made the effort to support the series when held in the South Coast area over many years, that saw Pambula selected as a possible host for the event.

“With our new clubhouse operational, easy access to a beach with reasonably challenging surf conditions, and accommodation close-by, Pambula SLSC was able to secure one of the three rounds to be held this season”, Manson said.

Action will get underway with the initial heats starting at 10.30am. The finals will start at around 2pm, with action winding up at about 5pm.

“We will have a barbecue running all day, then presentations and dinner for the crews in the clubhouse from about 6pm. All-in-all we are looking at a fantastic day of surfboat action which the public is invited to come along and be part of”.
