Freya’s off to California

06 May, 2009 10:11 AM
The wins just keep coming for local surfer Freya Prumm, who took out the all-schools surfing comp in Werri beach in early April, and more recently the prestigious Volcom Qualifying Series in Manly, making her the Australian VQS champion.

Freya was met with challenging conditions on day one of the event, with one and a half to two metre surf and onshore winds, the waves were messy and difficult to ride.

She surfed well, successfully making it through into round two.

Having to find the best wave in only ten minutes meant the pressure was on.

Freya waited for a set and surfed it all the way in, progressing to the quarterfinals.

Later that day, with her confidence growing Freya carved her way into the semi-finals.

Day two saw excellent conditions for the semis, with her attacking forehand and slashing backhand Freya found herself beating some of the top juniors in Australia, notably Philippa Anderson.

In the final, Freya’s experience payed off as she caught one excellent scoring wave after another.

At the ten-minute mark Freya had three high scoring waves with competitor Dimity Stoyle yet to find one.

In the last minute Freya sealed the win with a perfect left-hander that she ripped apart surfing it all the way to the beach.

The grommets cheered both girls as they came up the beach through a guard of honour.

This win means Freya will now compete in the VQS world championship at Newport Beach, California in May.
