17 Mar 10 | Time to change practices of logging industry The term ‘managing’ forests is a confusing one. In many people’s minds the words logging and managing are blended.
17 Mar 10 | The absolute shame of it The community is entitled to feel outraged with the Bega Valley Shire Council over its insistence that a big wad of the money it has raised to build the Sapphire Aquatic Centre is to be hived off to pay for council headwork charges, the widening of the entry off Pambula Beach Road and reconstruction of the road leading into the pool and the carpark.
10 Mar 10 | The differences between CO2 and H2O in the climate debate Bruce Gaunson’s letter (MNW 24/2/10) raises the intriguing question of why increasing atmospheric CO2 is thought to be driving global warming but water vapour, an equally potent but far more abundant greenhouse gas, does not.
10 Mar 10 | The issues faced by the Wyndham residents as they do battle to protect the integrity of their water supply are a reflection of a much larger problem.
03 Mar 10 | Having lived in this community for 30 years, I am disgusted by the mismanagement and dishonesty I’ve witnessed on the part of your predecessors.
03 Mar 10 | I am a reformed smoker, one of that band of vehement crusaders who can self-righteously scorn those who smoke.
24 Feb 10 | There are fresh fallacies in last week’s letter from Matthew Nott [MNW 17/2/10]. He invokes the scientific organisations which measure global temperature.
24 Feb 10 | It will be interesting to read the population figures for the Bega Valley Shire in the next Census due to be held on August 9, 2011.
17 Feb 10 | On Saturday, February 6 my children and I had the great privilege to be part of a wonderful coming together of generations from the Pambula/Merimbula region who’d gathered to farewell Peter Hellmrich, a dear brother, uncle and friend. Known to many as “Doc”, Peter died in Sydney in the early hours of New Year’s Day.
10 Feb 10 | With recent media reports of irregularities, it is timely to review what is known of the IPCC’s performance.
10 Feb 10 | The sound of steady rain falling on the roof accompanied by the croaking frogs was the sweetest of lullabies that residents in the Bega Valley Shire could have heard on Thursday night after one of the longest and most sustained periods of dry weather in the shire’s history.
05 Feb 10 | An area of Australia life which cannot be avoided by the casual observer of all forms of modern media is the growing clamour of the indigenous promotion machine.
05 Feb 10 | We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the family of Kylie Poyner and to the parents of the injured youngsters our earnest hopes that they recover from this tragic and terrible accident.
27 Jan 10 | Rising sea levels? Let’s be sensible Coastal Australians and their councils face a rising tide - of doomsayers. It’s not just local crusaders (e.g., Matthew Nott in this newspaper 13/1/10) putting out alarming images and statistics. The Rudd government is also doing this. Penny Wong’s department is claiming that in 90 years’ time, our sea levels could be over a metre higher.
27 Jan 10 | Ingenious council at work When it comes to extracting dollars from the ratepayers the Bega Valley Shire Council is truly ingenious.
20 Jan 10 | It is interesting that S Johns from Port Macquarie has so much local knowledge.
20 Jan 10 | The proposed Sapphire Aquatic Centre at Pambula has had a real battle in the past to secure the Bega Valley Shire Council’s support for the project. In 2009 the Pambula Aquatic Centre Inc. (PACi) appeared to make some headway with the council and it was confident that the council had committed to the development of the project. However today that confidence may seem misplaced.
13 Jan 10 | Loved the Cab Sub from CC Halton (your say 6 January) outlining in detail the history of long term planning affecting local government in NSW, including the planning for future public hospital facilities in the region.
06 Jan 10 | Provision of public hospital facilities
31 Dec 09 | It’s only one opinion I refer to Barb Aggenbach’s letter “Why we fight to save our hospital” published in the Merimbula News Weekly, December 9, in particular the last paragraph which has provoked an understandably angry public response, especially in the northern part of the shire.
