The community is entitled to feel outraged with the Bega Valley Shire Council over its insistence that a big wad of the money it has raised to build the Sapphire Aquatic Centre is to be hived off to pay for council headwork charges, the widening of the entry off Pambula Beach Road and reconstruction of the road leading into the pool and the carpark.

Coastal Australians and their councils face a rising tide - of doomsayers. It’s not just local crusaders (e.g., Matthew Nott in this newspaper 13/1/10) putting out alarming images and statistics. The Rudd government is also doing this. Penny Wong’s department is claiming that in 90 years’ time, our sea levels could be over a metre higher.

20 Jan 10 | The proposed Sapphire Aquatic Centre at Pambula has had a real battle in the past to secure the Bega Valley Shire Council’s support for the project. In 2009 the Pambula Aquatic Centre Inc. (PACi) appeared to make some headway with the council and it was confident that the council had committed to the development of the project. However today that confidence may seem misplaced.

I refer to Barb Aggenbach’s letter “Why we fight to save our hospital” published in the Merimbula News Weekly, December 9, in particular the last paragraph which has provoked an understandably angry public response, especially in the northern part of the shire.
