Bruce Gaunson’s letter (MNW 24/2/10) raises the intriguing question of why increasing atmospheric CO2 is thought to be driving global warming but water vapour, an equally potent but far more abundant greenhouse gas, does not.

Coastal Australians and their councils face a rising tide - of doomsayers. It’s not just local crusaders (e.g., Matthew Nott in this newspaper 13/1/10) putting out alarming images and statistics. The Rudd government is also doing this. Penny Wong’s department is claiming that in 90 years’ time, our sea levels could be over a metre higher.

I refer to Barb Aggenbach’s letter “Why we fight to save our hospital” published in the Merimbula News Weekly, December 9, in particular the last paragraph which has provoked an understandably angry public response, especially in the northern part of the shire.
23 Dec 09 | After reading the Bega Valley Shire Council meeting notice and agenda for Tuesday, December 15 (council meeting), I felt compelled to go along and watch what I believe to be another nail being driven into the coffin of democracy. As a part of this meeting's agenda, councillors were to vote on the Joint Regional Planning Panel.
16 Dec 09 | As a local I read with interest the Merimbula News Weekly along with other local papers, and I find it impossible not to respond to the constant Bega bashing from a few individuals in the Merimbula community. (Barb Aggenbach MNW December, 9 and BDN December 11).

On the government website, Department of Health and Ageing, I find your concern for the eyesight of the elderly nothing short of hypocritical in view of the recent cut to the cataract operation funding, yes, our eyes are precious as you so aptly pointed out.

I arrived in Australia by boat in 1960 at a cost of 10 pounds. I was a pommie migrant. We lived in migrant hostels, not much different from today’s detention centres.
