Footy for fun is back

Following on from last summer’s “footy for fun” evening and the recent success of the AFL 9s competition, organisers have decided to run another evening of AFL 9s including a masters/father-son game.

Pambula Beach Sporting Complex will again be the venue, with the first game of 9s kicking off at 5pm followed by the main game at 6pm, tomorrow, January 4.

AFL 9s is a non-contact version of AFL, played on a reduced sized ground in three zones of forwards, mid field and back.

Three players from either team are in each zone and only the forwards are allowed to kick goals. Females get nine points for their goals.

The game is open to both male and female, 14 years and up.

This version of the game allows mums, dads and their kids to all experience playing AFL together.

Teams on the field are made up of three girls and two over 35’s. Go to www.afl9s.com.au for more info on the game.

Following the 9s, there will be a masters/father-son game.

Last summer this was played in great spirit with players coming from Canberra, Victoria and the coast.

The game had a few father-son combinations playing against each other which saw the sons giving dad a bit of a footy lesson.

This game is played on the full field with 18 a side, and slightly modified from the serious version.

Played under the master’s rules, there’s no sling tackles or knees in the back.

You don’t need footy boots to play, just turn up in your runners.

Players from Canberra, Melbourne and local football clubs have already pledged their support.

This year organisers are asking for a $5 donation per player with all money raised going to Cystic Fibrosis.
