Flamboyant Queensland mining magnate Clive Palmer has spent some of his billionaire wealth in Pambula.
“It’s not every day a billionaire is at the end of the phone keen to buy your product,” said Adam Thomas, of Adam’s Prestige & Classic Motors, Pambula.
“Here I am in the middle of no man’s land and I’m contacted by the richest man in Australia and have a commodity he wants,” Thomas said.
Palmer, who is putting a vintage car collection together for his Palmer Cove Coolum resort, had eyed off a six cylinder 1926 Rugby R Tourer on Thomas’s website and instructed one of his offsiders to seal the deal.
The six cylinder is rare as they were only manufactured for three years.
Thomas had received a couple of earlier phone enquiries about two other cars in his showroom, a 1939 Packer and a 1927 Flat-nosed Morris Tourer, but they were each sold days within days of the phone calls to other interested parties and Thomas had no idea at that stage who he was dealing with.
When the call came through about the Rugby the voice struck a familiar note with Thomas who said: “You have called a few times” and in response was told I’m ringing on behalf of someone else who is putting together a collection of vintage cars.
Up to date with all that is happening in the car world and aware Palmer was putting a collection together, Thomas asked: “Are you ringing on behalf of Clive Palmer?” the answer was in the affirmative. Thomas was told that Palmer had been on the web searching for cars and had found all three vehicles on his website.
But this time Palmer and his offsider had wised up to the idea do the deal before it sells and clinched the sale.
The car has gone and will shortly be on display in the museum when it opens.
Thomas sources and sells cars over the internet all around Australia and overseas.
“Whereas 20 years you needed a highway frontage to be successful, today I am in a side street in Pambula and I have a global market at my front door.”
He said he can see the day when retail shops will disappear and everything will be sold online. “We are moving steadily towards that.”
Thomas said he will have five of his high end cars at the News Weekly’s The Big Boyz Toyz Expo at the Pambula Sports Complex on March 9.
Referring to the expo he said: “What a fantastic idea that is.”
