On Friday, February 22 police received a call from a motorist, mid morning, to say that his car had slipped on a large oil spill at the corner of Merimbula Drive and Market Street. The Merimbula Fire Brigade was quickly called to the scene and a couple of bags of a special type of sawdust which absorbs the oil were spread across the intersection while police held up traffic approaching Market Street and directed traffic into Merimbula Drive.
Police said that the spill was quite large and didn’t believe it had come from leaking engine oil as they would have expected to see a car broken down further along the road. Police also pointed out that any rainfall on the untreated oil would have made the road very slippery.
