The chooks, the chef and the poultry breeder

Around 130 people went to Oaklands Event Centre on Saturday, September 28 to see star of the River Cottage program, Paul West and a host of other guest speakers talk about sustainable living.

To a background of clucking and crowing from the chooks behind him (and the occasional amorous activity), Paul spoke about his journey from community gardener and apprentice chef to working 16 hours a day at an expensive restaurant in Melbourne. It was after he started sustainable farming on Tasmania that he was persuaded to apply as the front man for the Australian River Cottage program, made famous by UK celebrity chef and food activist, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall.

The crowd was also treated to a delightful and very funny presentation from poultry breeder,  Tabitha Bilaniwskyj-Zarins, of Candelo, who showed everyone how to wash a chook in preparation for showing.
