Mobile internet speed has been boosted in Merimbula for Telstra customers, in time for the peak tourist season.
The new 4G coverage provides locals and holiday makers in Merimbula with mobile broadband speeds as fast as those in capital cities, said Chris Taylor, Telstra Country Wide’s area general manager for Southern NSW.
Mr Taylor said: “Our investment here is particularly in response to the demand we had over the last Christmas break, and we recognise that it did cause an inconvenience to local residents and to visitors in the area.
“The data explosion has been absolutely astronomical, and it’s a national thing, but when you suddenly tripling of population of visitors into an area like that, we recognise that we really needed to do something. That’s why we’ve ensured we’ve got the 4G network turned on so it’s ready to go for the next peak season.
“As well as faster download speeds, the increased bandwidth will improve upload speeds; a real plus for locals as well as professionals, who will benefit from the ability to send large files while they are on the move.”
Mr Taylor says that the 4G network complements the national broadband network, which may be twice as fast.
While the 4G coverage is only provided to Telstra customers and is limited to the densely populated part of Merimbula, people on the 3G network may also experience benefits.
“What it will do is take a lot of the data traffic off the 3G network, which frees it up to have more ability to take extra capacity,” Mr Taylor said.
The 3G network is received by people in more remote areas, and service providers that have roaming agreements with Telstra.
“Data use on Telstra’s 4G is now growing at approximately 23 per cent each month, meaning it more than doubles every four months.
“And now locals in Merimbula will be able to enjoy the benefits of these advanced devices and superfast network.”
