Vandals arrested

Bega Valley Shire Mayor, Bill Taylor was pleased to learn today that two men had been arrested and charged over last week’s vandalism of Littleton Gardens in Bega.

Less than a week after the official opening of the rejuvenated Gardens,  park furniture was burnt and racist graffiti was painted on an adjacent wall.

Cr Taylor said that two local men aged 34 and 39 years old had voluntarily confessed their involvement in the crimes to the local Police.

“People are very quick to blame young people for anti-social behaviour, but in this case the perpetrators were well out of their teens and certainly should have known better.

“That they have confessed to the vandalism is a strong indication that the public reaction against their actions will have influenced their decision to own up.

“At this stage we do not know why they chose to vandalise this lovely space.”

Cr Taylor said that council will be seeking compensation for the damage.

The two Bega men will face the Bega Court on Tuesday 28 January 2014.
