Two concerts at the Club Sapphire on Saturday, May 31 and Sunday, June 1 thrilled the sell-out audiences at each performance, warming up music lovers for the Jazz Festival starting this weekend, Friday June 6.
The performances by the Sapphire Coast Concert Band, led by Dave Willis, and the Sapphire Coast Big Band, conducted by twin brother, Geoff Willis, was accompanied by Australian entertainment scene stalwart, Denise Drysdale, who sang and compered the event, which showcased popular songs from musicals and films.
Conductor, Geoff Willis said: “Both concerts went like a dream. The band members were ecstatic having the opportunity to perform in front of such a wonderful audience. Denise was a real professional as always.”
Geoff attributes the concerts’ success to preparation and talent. He said the bands did a lot of rehearsing and worked as a team, with everyone doing their job. He emphasised being impressed at the depth of musical talent in the region, and paid tribute to the bands’ members who range in age from 13 – 70, all of whom learn from and support each other.
If you missed the concerts at Club Sapphire, or if you’d like an encore, the Sapphire Coast Big Band will be performing in the Jazz Festival on Saturday, June 7 at the Pambula-Merimbula Golf Club at 2.30pm and again on Monday at the same venue at 1.30pm.
