Regional hospital construction tour for department heads: Photos

DEPARTMENT managers from the Bega District Hospital were given a tour of the South East Regional Hospital site on Tuesday.

With construction continuing apace, the department heads were given a grand overview of the multi-million dollar facility – and where their own units would be located once the SERH opens, which is scheduled for 2016.

The key activities on site that were pointed out on Tuesday included that the lower ground floor concrete slab is now 95 per cent complete, while the ground floor’s suspended slab is 80 per cent complete and much of the scaffolding is in the process of being removed.

Meanwhile, suspended concrete slabs continue to be poured on the top floor (50 per cent complete) and the roof and plant rooms (20 per cent).

The mental health inpatient unit is now seeing walls, a façade and roof going up, while the Primary and Community, Community Mental Health and Ambulatory Care units are beginning to be fitted out with internal walls.

Of particular interest for those touring the site on Tuesday was seeing the progress on a dedicated Renal unit, as well as the considerable size of what will become the Oncology ward and external courtyard overlooking the Bega River valley.

Project change manager Kerry Abramowski said there are about 170 workers on site at the moment.

Of these, approximately 40 per cent are local, with 12 local sub-contractors currently working on site.
